Dinghy General Handicap Race – Explained

A general handicap race is a common type of dinghy sailing race where boats of all types and speeds compete together in the same race, and results are worked out using a handicap system to keep things fair.

Here’s how it works:

  • There are two starts, class 1 and 2 together, and then 3, no matter what type they are.

  • The race follows a set course, and everyone sails the same number of laps.

  • Because some boats are naturally faster than others, we use a handicap number (often based on the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick) to level the playing field.

  • After the race, each boat’s finishing time is adjusted using its handicap. This gives a “corrected time.”

  • The boat with the best corrected time is the winner!

This means even if you’re sailing a slower boat, you still have a great chance of winning if you sail it well. It’s a fun way for everyone to race together, regardless of experience or equipment.

Whether you're new to racing or a seasoned sailor, general handicap races are a great way to improve your skills, enjoy some friendly competition, and have fun on the water.
